1. Yes. A1 Bassline is back, and I'm glad to see it. 1:38, nice name drop and horror synth combo. Incorporating more glitch, as well as 'grime' into his remix makes this tune top notch. Oh, and keep a lookout for grime. Methinks next dubstep (but better).
2. Danger, danger! You're getting into dangerous territory, Danger! Danger, have you no sense of what is dangerous? Danger! But not at his finest. But still Danger. Danger!
3. This, my friends, is what Danger should be producing. Which means that it's bordering on being flawless.

Commentary:

Hi. My computer died on me. Probably too much of me using iTunes (or the fact that it was positively ancient). Transferring all my data took a while, and getting my head around all this computer nonsense took weeks. So, hopefully, I'll be getting a new (quad core) computer soon, and getting back to blogging (regularly).

There will be changes coming to this blog. So hang tight!

Cassian is starting to promote aggressively, you can see it all over Melbourne. Aggressively playing at various clubs, aggressively launching various EPs (one), and, of course, aggressively distributing various promotional music. Which is odd, as his music is not at all aggressive, but funkified and full of groove. Except that I'll Get Yeww! remix. Obviously bettered by this one.

Love Peanuts? Love this. Peanuts Club, has gotten much attention from various musicians and bloggers, including remix work, so Noob & Brodinski can be proud of their efforts. I'll be looking at the less popular, but equally polished remixes, since you've probably already heard the Beatacue one.

LA Riots are veteran remixers, and this track is no exception, showcasing their ever increasing arsenal of synths, editing skills, and somewhat pre-packaged sounding drum beats. As you would expect from LA Riots, the song thuds along at first, until the squealing synth starts to kick in.

Now, I've been keeping this little gem to myself until the right opportunity to post it came along, and here it is. Buttonmasher, a young man hailing from Melbourne, Australia, remixed the song in question many (blog) years ago, and, it's pretty darn good. Think bleeps, but lots of them, acting together, in synergy.

Danger seems to be whacking out material to increase hype for his third EP, 09/17/2007, due out for digital release on the first of February. His remix of Drown In The Now, is almost entirely glitch with a base of a simple Danger track, which is strange for a Danger remix, but hey, it's Danger. 4h30 is very typical Danger, but I dig the heavier beats and occasional 90's house kick.

Oh, look at this. Mille put out a remix too, which sounds very similar to early Danger, except it has a blissful intro and wonderfully peaceful vocals. Opinion? You know you want it. Basically, it's what I would prefer Danger to sound like.

Danger continues to remix more popular artists, in this case, One Republic's All The Right Moves. Danger is moving further and further away from his signature sound, to a fuzzy, less engaging one, although that lovely Danger sound does kick in later on in the track. Personally, I don't think it's time to move away just yet, and that Danger has indeed not pulled 'all the right moves'. I am so witty.

He's back, and it's pure SebastiAn, experimental and destructive. The original track was 13 tracks of unlistenable noise, but luckily Too Many SebastiAns has provided us with a nice little edit.

MMMatthias has returned to us with a glitchy, growling, and somewhat relaxing remix of Yeasayer. As you would expect, the entire melody is constructed from glitchy, rearranged vocals, random sounds, and occasionally 8-bit tunes. Very nice.

Mr Oizo's Cheetas is, surprisingly non retarded. While this might be beneficial for the majority of musicians and their music, it's not for Mr Oizo, who we've come to think of as our loveable, crazy Frenchman friend. Come on Mr Oizo, we need more 'woops' and 'pew, da-d-da, je suis!' in your music!

1. Excellent remix, deserves to be at top spot. Goes off at 1:14.
2. Erik Hassle's music sometimes comes across as somewhat bland and austere, but Crystal Fighters added a variety of drums and buzz to bring out his voice. Great.
3. Very simple Boys Noize, very simple. But very good.
4. Ah ah ah ah, keum keu-keum keum keu-keum, for-or-or-or-or-or-or-or-or-or ey ey! You know how it goes. Pure glitchy goodness from Fake Blood himself.
5. Really not that good at all.
6. See above. But add more lol.
7. I don't care if it has Mariah Carey. It's damn good, and you know it! Designer Drugs did their homework on this one.
8. "It's just another hospital, it's just another, it's just another." with squealing, reverb, gristle and distortion to make this one tasty track.
9. Jack Beats destroyed this song. And, while some people view destruction as a good thing, I don't necessarily agree. Check out the much more polished DatA remix instead.
10. Daft Punk are a timeless duo. Fragile might possibly be a fake, but that doesn't make this any less alluring.

Commentary:
1. Featuring aspects of indie (plenty of guitar, subdued female vocals) and electro (a mixture of heavier reverberating bass and softer synths), this is one top notch track.
2. This is the type of song that we've come to expect from Chateau Marmont, the dreamlike, surrealistic synthfest that makes
3. Rocking out with 90's house influences, Surkin pulls it off with style and, most importantly, rave stabs.
4. A heavy remix from those kids called Villains, this features womping and buzzing bass in spades. 1:36 is groovy.
5. Justin Faust is an accomplished remixer. This is a prime example.
Bonus For Cool Cats:
6. That Crystal Fighters magic is everywhere, the heavy drums, the Spanish guitar and accents, deliciously european.
7. Vocals distorted so that they slowly but surely increase in pitch, leading to a 4x4 beat breakdown, Proxy style.
8. Ignore the depressing name. This is, without a doubt, one of the happiest songs I have heard for a long time. Think Passion Pit happy.
9. When A1 Bassline does things right, he does them right. This is a near perfect remix of New In Town (still don't know why he changed the title). Even the dubstep is decent.
10. Ever read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald? If that was a song, this would be it. Now, when a song reminds you of classic literature, it must be good. How fitting that the remixer is called Hemingway.

Round Up 2009 : Top 5 Albums

A quick overview of the albums that made my year. Obviously, this list isn't exhaustive, and will probably change over time. But I'm just going to stick to now. Otherwise, I'm just thinking too much, no?

5. Little Boots - Hands
To be honest, I'm surprised that Little Boots' album Hands wasn't the success I expected. It's catchy, melodic pop, yet it wasn't catchy enough to catch on. Little Boots' vocals blend seamlessly with the synths, and, for pop, the lyrics aren't overly soppy or risque (though, admittedly, a few songs are). Regardless of it's lack of commercial success, Hands is still a fairly solid album, one that Victoria Hesketh should be proud of.

4. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Ahh, Phoenix. Your songs have been misquoted by people all over the globe, and you should be proud of it. The key? Being wonderfully simple. In a time where Frenchmen are using more and more electronic trickery, and making their music increasingly more complex and layered, Phoenix said no. And for this, their music stands out. Phoenix is one of the few bands that have managed to be accessible to the populace, yet simultaneously retain their indie-cred, which is no mean feat.

3. DatA - Skywriter
From the velvety vocals of Sebastien Grainger, and the impeccable smoothness of DatA's production, comes Skywriter. The album has the ability to make you stare up at the sky in wonder, or turn your eyes to the dancefloor. Every track is amazingly polished, and one has to wonder whether or not DatA has stolen his crafting skills from the Greek god Hephaestus (probably not).

2. Passion Pit - Manners
If there's one album here that can make me smile, it's Manners. Seemingly created exclusively for summer, it's wonderfully charming and youthful, thanks to the heavy use of children for backing vocals. Definitely one for summer.

1. Shadow Dancer - Golden Traxe
Golden Traxe is your number one album? You better believe it. Sounding like it's been taken straight from a live mix, Golden Traxe is intricately detailed in a way that other artists could only dream of replicating. From the wide range of electronic music genres it takes influence from, to the incredibly consistent and varied synthwork and distortion going on, and the abundant number of microsamples and glitches, it's clear that Shadow Dancer knows their stuff, and, more importantly, how to pull it off. Top stuff. Top album.

A joint effort by the two biggest Turkish producers in the world. Enough said.

4. Siriusmo - The Uninvited Guest
Siriusmo is one talented boy. Listening to his EP just tells you about the wide knowledge he has of music in general. Sure, anyone can make random synths, sounds and glitches, but it takes a lot of skill to make it addictive to listen to.

3. Mustard Pimp - Cherry & Kiwi
Mustard Pimp! If you go through Rarche, you'll find Mustard Pimp is one of the most blogged about artists, as well as being one of the most highly praised. This EP is a prime example of their music : loud, abrasive, and in your face. Just how I like it.

2. Boys Noize - Starter
Remember what I said about needing a huge amount of skill to pull off glitch/Turkish producers? The first time I heard the glitchiness of Jeffer, I had it on constant repeat. That normally doesn't happen to me. Then a few months later, after having initially ignored Starter, I started listening to it a lot. Moral of the story is, this EP is good stuff.

1. Fake Blood - Fix Your Accent
Blew my mind when I heard this. When I got my hands on this, I was expecting something similar to Mars. The Chicago House sound hit me hard, knocked me down, and made me completely forget about the type of song I was originally expecting from Fake Blood, which could be found in The Dozens if need arose. Say, that kid thinks of everything.

Round Up 2009 : Disappointments

By using the term 'Disappointments', by no means at all am I saying that these artists are terrible, or even that what they churned out in 2009 is. What I mean by disappointment, is that, like an underachieving genius, they could have done a lot better.

Danger : 09/16/2007 was underwhelming, and the most recent Danger remix of 2009, of Give It All You Got by Lil Jon, wasn't 'dangerous' enough, in the try-something-different sense, as well as the pun sense. Compare this to 2008, where Danger released a slew of top-notch remixes, and you'll see why he's in this particular Round Up.
2010? : Not entirely sure, but Danger should pull through with an EPIII and album next year. I suspect the reason why 2009 was such a letdown was because he was preparing for his new album, which should be an engulfing, surrealistic experience.

A1 Bassline : A1 Bassline has the intros, the outros, and the build ups down (his build ups are top notch). So what has he done wrong in '09? Choosing dubstep for his drops. It's not that fidgety, gritty dubstep, but a rapid, fast firing type, which even though appeals to me more than most dubstep, it's still dubstep. But now it has shifted away from the rapid fire dubstep, to a high pitched, whooping type, which, quite frankly, destroys the entire track. It's a shame really, as I really enjoy his newfound style of glitched Jamaican Rasta vocals.
2010? : Emphasise the Jamaican Rasta, add more glitch, drop the dubstep, or at least make it filthier, and 2010 shall be a great year.

Little Boots - Remedy (A1 Bassline Get Hype Remix)

Bag Raiders : Bag Raiders had the EP of 2008. Both Turbo Love and Shooting Stars were faultless, truly. Bag Raiders also had some of the finest remixes of last year, in particular, their remix of Far Away by Cut Copy, which I now deem to be a perfect remix. Fast forward to 2009, and their productions are well below par, and too 'gangsta' for my liking.
2010? : Album coming out 2010. Should be impeccable.

Kid Sister - Pro Nails (Bag Raiders Remix)

Writing this Round Up hurt in it's own way, it made me realise how disappointed I was by some of my favourite artists. Come on guys! 2010 is a new year :)

Round Up 2009 : Mixed Bag

The term 'Mixed Bag' can be represented by a bag of lollies. Inside the bag of lollies are chocolate, jersey caramels, and fruit chews, but with them lie liquorice, industrial strength popping candy, as well as the occasional sweet proudly claiming that it has 'no poison'. All in all, the good and the bad are in the same bag.

Fred Falke : In a time where peaceful, dream-like synths are gaining in popularity, you would think that one of the behemoths of the genre would stick to it. Apparently not. Even though I applaud him for having, what we Australians call, the balls to change, I'm not too sure about his new sound. But Mr. Falke is wise enough to keep enough of his sunshine synth in his productions to keep people hooked, and by changing his sound he's opening himself up to new fans and horizons, so I guess you can say Mr. Falke is one smart cookie.
2010? : As long as he retains enough of his signature sunshine, 2010 should be a healthy year for Mr. Falke.

Burns - First Move (Fred Falke Remix)

The Twelves : I don't know if it's just me, but a lot of the stuff from The Twelves just sounds stale and unappealing to me now. On the other hand, sometimes it's absolutely brilliant, oozing funk and glitter. Even so, I shouldn't have to force myself to listen to the majority of their remixes.
2010? : Should be a stellar year for The Twelves, considering the amount of blog love they get. Although they haven't been churning out as many remixes lately, but this probably means an album is in the works.

Terry Poison - Comme Ci Comme Ca (The Twelves Remix)

The Bloody Beetroots : The Bloody Beetroots have had a very successful year. Warp was an incredibly popular track, as was their album (it was advertised here in Australia on posters, which is uncommon). Problem is, a lot of Romborama is crud, as are the remixes that were aimed at capturing a wider audience. However, The Bloody Beetroots still manage to occasionally put out gems that hit us hard or make us cry (not really), and remind us just why we fell in love with them in the first place.
2010? : Although it probably won't be as successful as 2009, 2010 should treat The Bloody Beetroots quite well, especially if they can afford to set Pioneer CDJ1000s on fire.

Proxy - Who Are You? (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Boys Noize : I have to be honest - I didn't like Power. Everything else that Boys Noize released this year was right on the ball, but Power just didn't do it for me. I found the whole album incredibly repetitive, and not catchy at all, which is a shame, as an album based on the Starter EP would have met all my expectations and more.
2010? : Seeing as he released an EP and an album this year, I think it's safe to say we can expect a rest from Boys Noize, or at least some more of his spiffy remixes and edits.

Round Up 2009 : Up & Coming

Expect a pearler of a 2010 for these guys, they deserve it.

Justin Faust : Everybody should dig Justin Faust. He has an enviable consistency, one that many artists struggle to achieve, as well as an almost perfect mix of dreaminess and the ability to make you tap your feet.

Crystal Fighters : I Love London should just be a starting point for these guys. They have that hectic, youthful sound down, as well as Spanish accents. Oh, and Spanish guitar. How can 2010 not be their year?

Pony Pony Run Run - Hey You (Crystal Fighters Remix)

Two Door Cinema Club : Two Door Cinema Club have that peppy, upbeat sound that is just so easy to love. Reminiscent of Mystery Jets, these kids know how to make a song that make you smile.

Two Door Cinema Club - Undercover Martyn

Marina & The Diamonds : The way for electro-pop darlings have been paved by acts such as Little Boots and La Roux, so expect Marina & The Diamonds to come storming in next year, with her catchy vocals and quirky sound effects aplenty.

Mille : We might have someone here who can throw Danger off his throne, provided Danger doesn't pick up his game in 2010. That alone says a lot, as Danger is miles (I was tempted to use 'Milles') in front of other artists who have a similar style of music. But then again, even if Danger does kick in 2010 and keeps his throne, what's to say Mille won't share it with him?

Proxy : Album coming out early 2010? Noice. The album will almost certainly cement Proxy's place as our favourite Russian avant-garde dance floor destroyer, as well as spreading his name to those who are less well informed.

Tiga - What You Need (Proxy Remix)

Mustard Pimp : Often referred to as "like The Bloody Beetroots, but better", I don't think that really does them Justice (spot the pun). They're maximal, but not too maximal, and that's how we love it here. Their recent signing to Dim Mak has almost guaranteed that a Mustard Pimp Warp equivalent will be made. Not that that's a bad thing.

It was once taboo to give out presents on Christmas, as it was considered a holy day (how we've changed). Most gifts were in fact given out on Boxing Day, and it was a more common practice to give to servants and employees, rather than people of a higher social standing. What usually happened, was that presents that the rich people received, or an item that they no longer had a use for, was simply repackaged, and then given away. Thus, the art of regifting was born.

My legs are being seared by the heat, and my feet are starting to melt. Sorry about the break from blogging kids, but Phillip Island called. Found me a dead penguin, being consumed by seagulls, an abundance of Kantuses, Maulers, Spitters, Chargers, as well as the occasional Templar.

Anywho, new music. Death To The Throne has a somewhat interesting track in I Only Have Eyes For You, the intro is engaging in it's own self-promoting way. Both Gentlemen Thieves tracks have a medieval-themed game feel, but that's brilliant in my eyes. Kid Adrift remix of Wolf Gang is buzzingly orchestral, a sound that I dont hear much of (maybe I should expand my musical horizons more).

Miami Horror remix of 5 Feet Of Snow has a Toxic Avenger feel, albeit more tame. Kid Cola remix of Horchata has that tropical Carribean fidget sound going on, and the Redial remix is different to most Walking On A Dream remixes, it has a more 'Danger-ous' feel about it.

I started building my Fixie today! I have a frame, two dodgy wheels, and a handlebar. It's a load of crap, but at least I'll be doing my bit for the environment. Not only am I not clogging the atmosphere with pollution from my car, but I'm making it from second hand parts, so that things are recycled. It's been a long time coming (a year and a bit?) but A1 Bassline's Bad Man Horror Theme got released. Although the music video is chockers with models in their underwear kidnapping A1 Bassline, I reckon a music video with history's villains (Nero, Attila The Hun, Jack The Ripper, Hitler, etc.)all dancing in unison would have been more entertaining, no matter how politically incorrect it may be.

On second thought, maybe not. Spot the difference between the older and revised versions.

Yo, new Danger interview out (it's in French). Ignore the dodgy grammar, my quick brush up of Google Translator's work will have to suffice.

So.

0) How Franck would describe the character "Danger".

It moves so strangely on stage, and does not seem to get warm even when it's 50 degrees.

1) Your musical universe, from your graphics to your outfits have made you a very popular artist in the electronica scene, a track from Danger is recognisable among 100 (?). How did you see the success and the euphoria around Danger, and the world around it?

I continue to be close to my influences, I make the songs I want to, I meet many people, I see many things, and I always pass many hours in front of a screen.

2) Tell us how you create, influences, video games etc. How do you take everything in your imagination and turn it into music?

After speaking with many DJs and musicians, I realise that I have a strange way to do that. I imagine a scene that I often draw, and it recalls to me that specific music, I work in a very visual way.

3) In your debut, you said you brought out the emotions/ideals of a child/youth through your productions, graphics etc. We feel that this line driver (?), change your sound, you live well, your world is changing and growing, is it linked to this "child" that which eventually grow and change ...?

It changes as my influences change, some are dark, some more Goler (evolved form of Geodude?) but I remain the same filter, I know what can go into Danger, and what can not.

4) One of your shows is as visual as it is musical, how do you prepare for this?

I work on my set live with a different device that uses unique technology.

5) With this rapid rise in fame, and you become to be wanted more and more all over the world, are you still a graphic designer/illustrator, or do you feel that the DJ/producer part of you is starting to take over?

I remain both, and both of them are becoming increasingly linked. I received about 300 drawings for the Danger Drawing Tournament, I draw a lot on the plane, I create all artworks for Danger while travelling on trains or planes, with a graphics tablet on my knees. Old people always ask me how it works.

6) Tell us about any current projects, such as what we can expect, like a new site, videoclips, a 3rd EP, or an album? You've held us in suspense for months!

I take my time because I feel it must be good, I do not feel a thing out in tears (?), I do not see videoclips as something that goes with the music, but as a short movie. The same goes for my album. My next EP released in November 2009. I'll post snippets from my new work on my Myspace in the summer, while preparing for the album that I'm currently working on. (NB: Apparently there are delays in releases, we must wait yet again)

7) What do you listen to when listening to music?

WhoDIB? : Heads Will Roll

Okay, I'm going to come clean with you guys. In my opinion, the A-Trak remix should be in this bout for the WhoDIB? title, but I'd like to overlook that, and turn your attention to these other remixes of Heads Will Roll, which have both sadly received little attention. The two tracks in question are from Little Vampire (taking advantage of the Twilight craze?) and James Iha.

Little Vampire's remix starts off with a simple gated synth, then has some galloping distorted bass thrown into the mix. It then, gradually but surely, kicks into a chorus that is layered with chords, several synths and drum beats. Little Vampire's take on Heads Will Roll is great in that it barely stops for a rest. Great.

James Iha kicks his remix off with a nifty little panning effect, with added sparkle. This is just a prelude to the track itself. The whole remix is polished, handled with aplomb and ease, and has an abundance of twinkles, piano, trumpet, orchestral strings, and congos. It simply is lovely, charming and wonderfully upbeat. I'm in love.

3. Drop, drop, drop. Glitch, glitch, glitch. That's all I can say about Soap, except that it's also good for cleaning oneself.

Crystal Fighters resfreshing single, I Love London has garnered much deserved attention from various blogs, and, well, why not? It buzzes and reverberates along at a frantic pace, and the whole song just screams, erm, I love London? Sorry. Stuck for a description.

80Kidz and Kid Cola (play the two remixes at the same time for an 80KidzCola remix) both apply squelching, squealing synths, but in slightly different ways. 80Kidz maintain the hectic feel of the original, as well as adding a 90's techno rave stab, while Kid Cola slows it right down, showing off a more fidgety type of approach.

Oh, Crystal Fighters remix for you kids. Hurried and brilliant, as always.

Ready for some French Electro? You know it. From Man & Man comes the track Les Grandes Vacances, a swinging, bubbly pop track. Bandit and The Sterehoes, both tried their hand at remixing, and, since thr original track is French, the only suitable remixers would come from France, no?

Bandit, as he does with all of his productions, applies simple yet effective synths to create an impressive sound of almost biblical proportions. All very well, but this technique almost completely erases the original pop quality of the track. Oh well. With beats like these, who needs pop?

The Sterehoes, on the other hand, have a much more polished remix, from the synths down to the drums. But just because it's polished, doesn't mean it has to be clean, does it?It may take a minute and a half for the vocals to kick in, but when they do, they somehow manage to complement the romping and the womping. And when the vocals are dominant, they're just deliciously, well, French.

He performed with Snob Scrilla at the launching of Melbourne rapper Phrase's album, Clockwork, and already has a Bag Raiders cover. Why haven't you heard about him yet? He's the next big thing, Ya Boy Bangs, a rapper from Footscray, Melbourne. Youtube his hit single, Take U To Da Movies, I guarantee you will enjoy it. Bag Raiders cover ain't half bad either, dawg.

Lifelike's dreamlike production always forms a sense of euphoria, the kind that sends shivers down your spine. But somehow, Lifelike also manages to incorporate a cetain groove into his music, without tainting it's frail beauty. Russia has seen an emergence of new talent in the Electro scene, mainly, Proxy. Proxy is renowned for his pounding, droning, and somewhat violent music, as well as his ability to experiment with new sounds and mix it in with his music almost seamlessly. Who Are You?, a track off his newest EP, is a prime example of this skill. The voice in the song is sampled off, wait for it, an anime called Black Lagoon. Cool.

Swish, I think I'm getting the hang of busting my gut over all these difficult questions. 5 down, 3 to go.

I was an LA Riots fan a long time ago. A very, very long time ago. I first listened to them before I even knew about 'blogs', and was still listening to Ministry of Sound (2006?). Their fresh, live-mix oriented style appealed to me, and LA Riots became one of the many emerging Electro artists that eventually led me to abandon old house acts such as David Guetta and Tommy Trash. Ha.

Lately, LA Riots have kinda dropped off my radar, so much so, that I had absolutely no idea that they were playing here in Melbourne tomorrow until 20 odd minutes ago. Anyway, LA Riots are back with a new remix of VHS Or Beta's Know When You Feel It. Fittingly, the first LA Riots remix I ever listened to was also a VHS Or Beta track, Can't Believe. Cosmic.

While I'm still relatively nostalgic, let's take a look at Wolfmother. I used to thoroughly enjoy Wolfmother, with their tight guitar riffs, thunderous drums and howling vocals. After the implosion of the original band (two out of three members quit), I was intrigued as to how the second album would compare to the first. Nowhere near the first, but not terrible, as some people have said.

The Wolfmother classic, Woman, was remixed by acts such as MSTRKRFT and Spod (brilliant name, that). The MSTRKRFT remix is everything MSTRKRFT should be now. Chock-a-block with cowbells, disco sounds and hand claps. The Spod remix is what Woman would sound like if it was simulated on a Gameboy. Riton managed to remix New Moon Rising by warping the vocals beyond recognition, resulting in a quirky, Riverside-like sound. I also have here Riton's remix of Para One's Midnight Swim, a remix that I enjoyed thoroughly many years ago. Upon re-listening to the track, it comes off as squealing, clanky and reverberating, not especially listenable. Ah well, I still enjoy it.

Here in Australia, the only way to access the Internet is to get a USB, load the data onto the USB, hire a Kangaroo, and then put the USB into the Kangaroo's pouch. It then hops away on it's two hind legs, to the nearest beacon of civilisation, where my post is delivered to you all, and it is rewarded with a Koala sandwich.

1. In all honesty, this actually does sound like Danger, if he was to take a new direction in his sound. Watch for 2:08, that's when those Carribean Marimbas kick in. Also has an eagle cry. Hot damn.
2. Everything you love about Designer Drugs. But crazier, darker, and edgier. An ominous, apocalyptic dance-floor destroyer. Lots of fun.
3. Reminiscent of clouds in all the right ways, this remix has beautifully crafted synths melded with pacific vocals that, when combined, soothe you into a state of higher consciousness.

Asked around on Erol Alkan forum (of which lately I've become a junkie), and I've been advised it might be better to change my blogging ways, that is, get every track straight from the artists themselves. Obviously, it's going to take a while to build up a relationship with all these artists, but, I'll try to do it eventually. Anyway, you're probably thinking "Quitcherbitchin', where's the music?", so here it is.

So, you kids are probably overeager to here some new tracks, so I'll deliver, with some, err, Robbie Williams. Coolest kid out. But err, seriously, his new track Bodies might not be exceptional or cutting edge, but the remixers... well, are Fred Falke and Aeroplane adequate? Thought so.

Now that I've scared you, I'd just like to say that I've noticed an increase in Fixie riders as of late. Many people seem to be attracted to the clean, minimalistic look (myself included). They also have the uncanny effect of portraying the rider to be more European than they actually are.

Have you kids been watching music videos lately? If so, you've probably spied the videos to some Empire Of The Sun tracks, namely 'Walking On A Dream', 'We Are The People' and 'Standing On The Shore'.

The first, 'Walking On A Dream' was filmed in Shanghai, and featured both Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore. The other two featured Luke Steele by himself, with no Nick Littlemore. Have you been wondering where Nick Littlemore is? So has Luke Steele.

Apparently, Luke Steele hasn't spoken to his Empire Of The Sun counterpart for over 5 months. No one knows where he is. And to top it all off, Empire Of The Sun had their first live show last night in Brisbane at Parklife. I wonder if Luke Steele pulled it off?

Mustard Pimp, beloved lords of Bassline, have finally been signed to a big label (well, it actually happened in July, but the new-single-hype is only occuring now). Those kids had it coming, and hey, maybe now they can tour outside of France (Melbourne please).

It's true, isn't it? New technology is fragile. I've had my iPod for less than a year (a red one, of course) but it's already starting to get dust under the screen. I bought my WeSCs (I don't care if you think they suck, they look good) at the same time, and the extension cord for them broke after about 6 months.

Worst.

New Daft Punk and Juggers. Juggers is 100% real, but there are doubts over the authenticity of the Daft Punk track, but I don't mind, it still sounds spiffy.

Album : Cities Of Gold

'Cities Of Gold' is the debut album from Sydney Psychedelic-Indie kids Lost Valentinos. They emerged in 2005 as The Valentinos, but had to change their name in 2007 to Lost Valentinos, due to a lawsuit from Bobby & The Valentinos.

In 'Cities Of Gold', Lost Valentinos continue their trademark sound - soaring yet searing synths, strangely macabre falsetto, as well as the occasional congo drum beat. The album seems to have been modelled on maintaining a mystical, cryptic feel, true to Psychedelic-Indie style. The outstanding tracks in my opinion are 'Thief', 'Serio', 'The Bismarck' and 'In The City Of Gold'. Despite the sombre feel throughout all the songs, they are strangely uplifting.

Wisely, the best tracks in this album have already been released as singles, so if you're expecting more one-track wonders, you'll probably be dissatisfied with this album, as the rest of the album can probably be viewed as fillers. However, this is one of those few true album-albums, which sound much more impressive if you listen to them from start to finish. If you're a true fan of Lost Valentinos, this album will not disappoint.

I expected better from these two. Any Fake Blood track should not go for one minute. And the Siriusmo remix of 'Shooting Stars' is criminally underdone. Not much is changed from the original, and what is changed, really isn't that spectacular.

Allure makes dazzling melodies, the type that just invokes a foot-tapping reaction. His tracks are full of reverb and distortion, but not the aggressive in-your-face variety, in fact, they come across as rather harmonious and soothing.

If his music was a drink, I would compare it to a light, bubbly Schweppes soft drink, probably Agrum.

Winegums are not good for your system. Especially when you attempt to eat the entire packet by yourself. I ate around 90%, but stopped when I felt like throwing up. I vowed never to eat winegums again.

The following day, I found the same packet of winegums lying in my bag. I ate the rest of them. I have now concluded that winegums are delicious.

Album : Humbug

Arctic Monkeys third album, 'Humbug', was sure to sell bucketloads. Which it did (outsold all other Top Five albums combined in it's first week). The album was not produced by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco fame, but by Josh Homme, of Queens Of The Stone Age. The result is an overall murkier, distorted sound.

Gone are the two/two and a half minute foot tapping, frantic songs that comment on life and love, instead, 3/4 minute ballads that are replaced slower, with a more developed sound. On the main part, catchy riffs are shunned so that the song as a whole can flourish. Catchy riffs can still be found in tracks such as 'Crying Lightning', 'Potion Approaching' and 'Dangerous Animals', but even in these songs lays a distracting overall fuzzy reverb, leaving the song lacking in crispness or vitality, the very things that helped the band achieve the incredible popularity they hold today.

Humbug heralds the maturing and refinement of the Arctic Monkeys. Despite what other critics may say, by no means is it a terrible album. It's just that it's different to their previous works. Unfortunately, this bold change may isolate their original fan base, leaving them wondering what happened to their beloved band.

Bigger Than Big was a pretty swell track, with an infectious vocal hook to reel you in. It would be a difficult yet interesting task to remix it, but Jupiter Ace and Bag Raiders were up to the challenge.

Jupiter Ace utilises the 'Bigger Than Big' voice snippet throughout the song, and presents a glitchy, sparkly melody for us to groove to, giving it a dancier edge. This assures that a diverse tune is achieved, rather than a boring repetitive one. Noice.

Bag Raiders also uses the 'Bigger Than Big' vocal snippet, layered with their trademark 'Rainbow Road Super Synth' (I may have made that name up), and, hell, it works like a charm. The instrumental and vocal parts of the main chorus are introduced at separate times, ensuring a delectably delicious drop at 2:26. This is an incredible remix, even by Bag Raiders standards.

The Bloody Beetroots once were one of the artists to watch. Now it seems they've somewhat fallen out of favour. Their debut album 'Romborama' didn't seem to be the success many anticipated, critically and commercially, despite the fact they are starting to be accepted by the club-oriented populace.

Now that I think about it, a similar thing happened to MSTRKRFT. They were the talk of the town, before their 'Fist Of God' album bombed, and they were rejected by the majority of the Blogosphere. Interestingly, they also seem to have been accepted by the more house-oriented public.

Mustard Pimp just released their 'Hercules' mixtape. It certainly is worthy of Mighty Hercules himself, clocking in at a total of 12 hours. Each one-hour part is named after one of the Twelve Labours of Hercules. I like the classical reference.

Also released are two new Mustard Pimp remixes, one of The Hives, the other of Partyshank (which A1 Bassline is half of). Also here for you Rarchesters is a remix of Mustard Pimp's 'RER D' by Mendel, as well as an original track named Valium.

Zoot Woman. That name reminds me of those infomercials called 'Zoot Review'.

Anywho, Zoot Woman creates interesting tunes. Comparisons? A more upbeat version of White Lies under the guidance of some prominent producer. I adore the song title 'Lonely By Your Side'. An oxymoron of sorts, it forces you to think. Which is needed nowadays.

Dyebox whacks out a meatier song with their remix of 'Live In My Head'. Not half bad.

2. The popularity of this really jumped out from nowhere, but I assume it's riding on the back of the recent release of GRUM's 'Heartbeats' EP. If you appreciate danceable, nouveau-disco, GRUM's your best bet.
3. Remove the dreamy, sparkle-in-your-eyes quality of the original, and replace it with a jazzy, upbeat melody of brass, bass and triangles, and you have yourself Shazam's remix of 'Shooting Stars'. Foot-tap invoking.

2. I love the Euro/American pop-like feel to this song, it somehow goes with the Electro aspects of this song. Also dig the Korg solo at 1:48.
3. 80's super synths from go. 80's piano/melody right after. 80's vocals afterwards. All with an oxymoronical (?) avant-garde retro twist. Perplexing.

I'll admit it, I'm a Fred Falke Fanboy. His production skills are unrivalled, he consistentally makes wondrously luxurious and dreamy tracks. In fact, the only time he doesn't hit the spot, is when he's paid to remix a song that wasn't really all that exceptional to begin with. He gets paid an absurd amount per remix though, so you can't really blame him (think in the thousands of dollars per remix).

I have a treat for you kids here, two of his original productions. Both possess Daft Punk like qualitites, in that they are upbeat and danceable, but also that they are incredibly repetitive and best left to play at parties/in the background. I also have a few of his more recent remixes, one of La Roux's 'Bulletproof' and his collaboration with Miami Horror on PNAU's 'Embrace', which made the tune a lot more danceable.

The Sterehoes

Very interesting. I have trouble pidgeon-holing 'The Sterehoes'. Their music is hard to classify, it ranges from abrasive and harsh, to a pacific, almost pop sound. They seem to be influenced by artists ranging from Daft Punk to SebastiAn. Quite a contrast.

Of their more mellow songs, 'Wake Up' almost sounds like something Designer Drugs would create, albeit with a more American Alternative flavour. 'Urgent Drugs' has that tap-your-feet Daft Punk disco feel going on, while 'Red Yellow Blue' calls to mind faux-European Indie/Eurovision (?).

The others, are, well, somewhat cacophonous in comparison. 'We Keep It Real' sounds like something I would expect from someone called 'The Sterehoes', hostile and hard hitting. Grinding, crunchy bass, and off-key squeals remind one of SebastiAn, while auto-tuned female vocals are very Boys Noiz-esque. The Sterehoes' remix of Minitel Rose's 'Continue' displays aspects of Mustard Pimp/The Toxic Avenger. In other words, heavy handed snares and crashes, chopped up, warped vocals, escalating growls and thick slabs of bass. Ouch.

But the good type of ouch.

Metronomy quirkiness, just as you love it. This remix of Joakim's 'Spiders' is very Metronom-esque. Placid and peaceful plinking and plonking, wobbling chords, and unneccesary squeals galore. The other track here, a remix by Blackout Crew, makes me laugh. I imagine neon glowsticks and aggresively styled haircuts. A must for Metronomy fans.

Kelly, one of the jewels on the crown of Van She's 'V', has been lucky enough to get the remix treatment from M83 and Breakbot, both masters of making fascinating music. Add that to the fact that the vocals to Kelly are already wondrous, and the result is breath taking.

M83 makes haunting music, and this remix is no exception. It sounds somewhat prophetic, as if it was taken straight from the soundtrack of an art-house movie with panoramic sweeps. Melds synths and acoustics like a master blacksmith.

Breakbot takes a slightly different approach, and tries to make Kelly more danceable. He does this by adding funky beats, old-school drum beats (think NY circa 1970), and a more disco feel, along with some 'ooo-ing' in the background. One would think with all these auxiliary sounds, the original feel might be drowned out. Not at all. Breakbot makes sure of that.

I haven't blogged for a while. I've been inundated with a plethora of tests and new coursework from school. I'm still reeling from the complexity of that bastard of a Specialist Maths test (yes, I'm a nerd). I suppose I performed decently. Considering that one of the questions was actually impossible to do.

I've also noticed that several of my blog posts have been deleted, as well as assorted tracks from my Mediafire account. Mediafire has also come under fire (pun), downloading has been difficult lately and at one point the website was down altogether. More reasons for a sad Coulson.

Tesla Boy, a Russian act that imitates the Synth laden Pop music of the 80's, plus all the fluro drenched retro hallmarks of 80's music you've come to love. Soft retro crooning, surrealistic echoes, gates of luscious synths, and occasional cascades of dreamy video game synths.

'Electric Lady' is my favourite listen, as it talks about making love to women. Great stuff. 'Spirit Of The Night' comes close, it talks about women. Great stuff too. 'Neon Love' is an epic, stretching out at 7 minutes, so not my cup of tea, but hey, it's Tesla Boy.

Bounce was, erm, interesting. Sorta acted as an omen to the failure of MSTRKRFT's second album, 'Fist Of God'. But, nevertheless, two different remixes, both very competent, emerged from the lifeless generic body of Bounce. These came from Italian scene stealers The Bloody Beetroots, and the Rembrandt of mixing, A-Trak.

The Bloody Beetroots, change Bounce in the typical Bloody Beetroots style. Listen to the song, discard everything except the vocals, which end up being completely warped, reconstruct the entire song with harder, more abbrasive synths, and voila.

A-Trak, on the other hand, pushes Bounce to it's very limits. He goes for a smooth, 70's dayum-what-chu-talking-bout aesthetic. Claps, break downs, impeccable sampling (try and spot it), some brass instruments, choir influenced cheers, and, most importantly, cowbells. Smooth.

A Game Of Chess

I think that picture sums up Proxy pretty well. A unique and thought invoking, yet blunt and somewhat traumatising look at what is now an established yet complex form of art.

Pretty nifty picture too.

Anyway, let's look into the brilliant and haunting mind of Russian producer Proxy, with his more recent work. 'Think First', which samples the 1979 Kung Fu film, 'The Mystery Of Chessboxing'. Brilliant stuff.

Meanwhile, '8000' and 'Indian Film' seem to have switched names. 'Indian Film' sounds like it's from the year 8000, while '8000' sounds like it's pulled from the newest Terminator movie, which was outsourced to India to save money.

'Who Are You? (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)' is, quite frankly, just noise. But damn good noise at that. I like it. Very Much.

Dragonette, If It Ain't Broke...

Don't fix it.

Dragonette are back. I don't know if you remember them, but they're an electro-pop outfit from the grand land many know (understandably so) as Canadia. Ditching their original sound, and opting for a more in-your-face approach, they released their new single 'Fixin' To Thrill'.

'Fixin' To Thrill' tries to mirror the grinding, mashing sound of acts like Justice, but doesn't quite hit it. Fortunately for Dragonette. Villains got their evil little hands on it, and crafted it into a little beauty reminiscent of Fake Blood circa late '07 - early '08. Noice.

Also here are brilliant remixes by The Toxic Avenger of 'Take It Like A Man', which was criminally underplayed, and Van She Tech's classic vocal mix of 'I Get Around', which was justifiably overplayed.

It's A Mistake To Be Nude

Well, in public at least. Otherwise tasks such as, for instance, getting dressed would be incredibly impractical. You would have to wear your new clothes over your old ones, and then squirm around and about until you managed to extract the ones underneath.

Lifelike's remix of 'Mistake' has that back-of-the-alley, smoke in the streets, 80's vibe to it, while sayCet's take on 'Nude' is harrowing and calm. Great fun.

WhoDIB? : Electric Bloom

Electric Bloom is one of my favourite tracks from Foals' debut album, 'Antidotes', along with Cassius and Hummer (although Hummer only appeared on the UK Special Edition of Antidotes). Electric bloom has been the subject of much remixing attention, and here today are a selection of two of the best, from Neo Tokyo and Malente.

Neo Tokyo has a real 'in your face' approach to Electric Bloom. The original acoustic guitar has been complemented with layers of fuzzy, heavy distortion, as well as the occasional howl and pointless (?) static. A bit like doubling the amount of 'Electric' while obliterating the 'Bloom'. Sorta like a chainsaw masacre of some sort.

Malente's take on Electric Bloom is a bit late to the game, it only surfaced recently, as opposed to all the other remixes which surfaced eons ago. Malente adds an erratic beat that gradually accumulates into a much thicker, meatier (erm...) sound that somehow doesnt detract from the original's brilliant vocals. Wonderful.

Start The Disarray

'Starter' is the less loved of the 'Starter' EP, despite being the cover song. Jeffer* just womps it, but hey, still good in it's own right.

Hervé's remix of 'Mercury' also utilises the vocals of 'She's Hearing Voices'. Odd choice that I would personally not make, but hey, he's the producer here. This track is often overshadowed on Intimacy Remixed by Armand Van Helden's remix of 'Signs' (which is pretty average).

Is that an American Apparel 'Salt and Pepper' hoodie I spy on Foamo? And those headphones look like top AKGs or top Sennheiser HDs. To boot, Foamo's got the attention of the entire Fidget scene, he's pretty much up there with Fake Blood and Hervé.

Jealous.

Anyway, Foamo has been nice enough to release his remix of 'No You Girls' by Franz Ferdinard. It was going to be an official remix on the EP, but Foamo didn't give it the go ahead. It's fairly polished, and doesn't overpower the original feel of the song (I like that, if you haven't noticed by now), and he also gives it that little bit of an extra kick. Noice.

Okay, Calling In Sick and The Bloody Beetroots have to share the 72 virgins, so that's 36 virgins each. And both are duos, so for each member that's 18 virgins. Sounds good, yeah?

Calling In Sick apply a distorted, fuzzy technique, which whirrs up and down like an engine. The lyrics are also treated well, they aren't ignored (which happens a fair bit in remixing), and are well balanced and complemented by the music storming around in the background.

The Bloody Beetroots* also add an abbrasive, smack-you-down-to-the-ground sound. It is seriously addictive, plus it makes me want to hit someone (always a good thing)! But it might be stretched a bit too long at 4 minutes, and ignoring most of the vocals isn't always the best thing to do.

Two recent remixes by Shinichi here for you kids, one of 'Thief', which will appear on the upcoming Thief EP by the Lost Valentinos, and the other of 'Turbo Love', from the Turbo Love Remix EP.

Both of them sound like what Boys Noize would sound like if he made material in between his album 'Oi Oi Oi' and 'Jeffer'. It has the abrasive, grinding sound of 'Lava Lava', albeit toned down, coupled with the womps, squicks, and abnormalities of 'Jeffer'.

I know the artist is called 'My Gold Mask', and no, they are not from a comic book series.
I know the remixer is called 'The Hood Internet', and no, they are not IT gangstas.

Welcome to the first edition of WhoDIB? [hoo-dib], or 'Who Does It Better?'.

First off, we have Housse De Racket, a duo comprising of a guitarist and a drummer (pretty slick), who are both well trained in the use of Synthesisers (even slicker). Hence Synthétiseur, which is French for Synthesiser! At least I hope so, I'm just assuming.

Secondly, we have the very established remixing behemoth known as Van She Tech. During 2007, Van She Tech was arguably the remix team. Sadly, during 2008 they released few remixes, and the ones that were released were sub par.

Housse De Racket's take is more of a rework than a fully fledged remix, but, it delivers. I really dig the stop start chords at the start, that eventually lead into a more powerful, smoother melody. The laser blips at the end are welcome too.

Fast forward to 2009, and Van She Tech are baaaaaaaaaaaaack. This remix is not to dissimilar from the Housse De Racket remix in terms of the stuttering, but Van She Tech adds their signature grinding guitar screams, even if it is only for a bit.
